Facebook protest: Australia – stop importing wood from illegal sources!

The Australian government has still not banned the import of wood from illegal sources. Other countries however act. Protest action via Facebook and BOS Deutschland in English and German by  Sean Whyte, Maik Schaffer and Lars Dittmer

The Australian government permits the import of wood from illegal sources from the rainforests of Indonesia. Though the decision makers in the country are aware of this problem, nothing has been done to stop it yet.

Illegal wood has been banned from the US two years ago and soon to be across all over the EU.

Bringing the import to Australia to a halt would be a great step to preserve the natural forests of Indonesia and the species that live there – still, Orangutans are killed for the profits of illegal loggers. Australia is in a geographically important position. A ban would massively contribute to environmental and climate protection efforts. For more information, please klick here.

The letter below is directed to Australian Senators.
PLEASE JOIN AND SEND THE LETTER BELOW! Please add your name and your country if possible. On behalf of the suffering Orangutans, thank you!

If you live in Australia, why not start your own letter writing campaign with friends, schools etc? It would be a great help if you were to do so.

The Hon. Peter Garrett
Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts

Dear Minister,

Australia needs to act now!

The impact of illegal logging is devastating the Indonesian rainforests and killing unique species like the orangutan that live there. The UN reports that in 2022, all lowland forests in Borneo will be destroyed. Often, the wood goes to Australia and from there to other countries of the West.

The newspapers report that Australian decision makers are well informed about this situation and a ban has been discussed for years. Please could you explain to me:

Why does the government still permit the importation of wood known to have been logged illegally?

Other countries act. The United States has banned the import of wood from illegal sources two years ago, the EU will follow soon. Why does Australia stand idly by?

Instead of supporting the conservation efforts, the Australian government has given money to build a road through pristine rainforest in Indonesia – that is, from Pontianak to Sintang in Western Kalimantan. Considering the fact that the new primeminister Julia Gillard has said that she favours a price on Carbon Emissions, do you know the price that Australia would have to pay?

Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely

DEUTSCHE ÜBERSETZUNG (bitte NICHT kopieren!)

Sehr geehrter Herr Minister,
